A modern wedding tends to be more over the top; with themes, large centerpieces, extravagant meals and cakes, and expensive djs who will play the night away. The ceremony is less solemn, the reception more expensive and crazier with much less respectable dancing, and the dress is bigger and more princess-y than in the past. The whole wedding can cost much, much money.

An actual wedding from the past was smaller, with more reverence in the ceremony, less focus on looking like a princess and having the grandest wedding the family has seen yet, and a simpler feel overall. There were no unnecessary themes or huge centerpieces; instead the wedding was about a man and a woman who had decided to commit to living life together and a celebration of that commitment. Dresses changed depending on the era - in the 30's they were slimmer, cut on the bias, and had little embellishment(for those who could afford them, otherwise it was the least dilapidated of a woman's dresses); in the 40s many women married in a suit or in a long sleeved, high-necked dress; the fifties were big skirts that hit about mid calf(though many were floor length as well) - wedding dresses followed the trends pretty closely until recently, when it became more acceptable to dress in whatever style was most flattering to you than to blindly follow trends.
Cakes were smaller, meals were simpler, and any music you had was probably either a local band or a record player. Music wasn't strictly necessary though; some weddings only had one or two songs at most.
