My girlfriend and I have been wondering about getting engaged but have no idea if it's just a simple promise to each other OR buying a ring, arranging the marriage, telling people about it and having a party etc. If i ask her to marry me and she says yes then were now engaged right?

A promise ring is different than an engagement ring. A promise ring is simply a promise to be true to each other. An engagement ring is a promise to MARRY each other.

Yes If you ask her to marry you and she says yes, then your are engaged. Most of the time when the guy proposes he gives an engagement ring, but it's not completely necessary if money is tight. The ring may come later. Some people have long engagements and some have short engagements. Usually if the guy proposes and she says yes, planning the wedding or at least setting a date is soon to follow. If you don't want to set a date for the marriage yet that's fine too and is common.If you don't want to ask her to marry you yet, you could buy a promise ring. That means that you promise to be together forever, but a wedding is not necessarily in the near future.
